When facilities use 1002

1002 is the accommodation code for substance use disorder residential treatment. Some payers also use it for residential withdrawal management with an H code on the line, so the same revenue code can carry very different services.

HCPCS pairings in payer guides

Payer guidePairing
Evernorth Behavioral Health1002 for substance use residential, no HCPCS
Point32Health1002 + H0011 for acute treatment services; 1002 + H0010 for a Level 3.5 clinical stabilization service
BCBS of Mississippi1002 as an accommodation line, days as units, type of bill 086X

Because 1002 can mean residential treatment or residential detox depending on the HCPCS, a missing or wrong H code is a common reason these claims deny.

  • Authorization for a different level. N54 or CO-284 when the auth is for detox but the claim bills residential, or the reverse.
  • Coverage ended mid-stay. CO-27. Re-check eligibility during long stays.
